The Dakota Senior Meals Program is a non-profit nutrition program that has been serving south central and south eastern South Dakota for over 30 years. It is a service provided by the Rural Office of Community Services (ROCS) in Lake Andes, SD. ROCS is a private, non-profit Community Agency providing a wide range of services including the Dakota Senior Meals program.
The Dakota Senior Meals program provides a nutritious noon meal five days a week at a nutrition site or home delivery is available for those who are unable to leave their homes. The program is for anyone 60 years of age or older and their spouses; however, any one may receieve a meal. At most sites reservations are required so that the kitchen staff knows how many meals to prepare and serve.
ROCS is governed by a tri-partite board of directors from the private, public, and low-income sectors. ROCS is funded by federal, state, country and city governments as well as private and local community support. The Dakota Senior Meals program is a true lifeline, whether recovering from a serious illness or surgery or just to have the opportunity to get together and socialize with others. Many times the people who home deliever the meals are the only people that a participant sees all day long. The Dakota Senior Meals program enables the elederly to stay in their home or apartment longer. This helps people stay where they are most comfortable, as well as helps save the state money and may prevent a person from using up their savings.
All donations are welcome to help pay for those who cannot afford the suggested donation. Dakota Senior Meals offers an "Adopt a Meal" plan that allows any one to donate towards a meal ticket for someone unable to pay for their own. We accept cash, checks, and food stamps. The suggested donation is $3.75.
If you have any questions or are interesting in becoming part of DSM, please give us a call and we will be glad to help you become a part of Dakota Senior Meals.
Senior Meals Program Makes a Difference in the Community
With increased focus on keeping senior citizens in their own homes as long as possible, Dakota Senior Meals in Springfield fills the need for a daily nutritious meal for seniors. Where else can you get a nutritious, home cooked meal for a suggested donation of $3.75 if you are over the age 60? No one is denied a meal if they are unable to pay. In researching meal costs, there is nowhere else to get a meal that meets the guidelines for adult nutrition at such a minimal cost. Meals are served Monday thru Friday. The center is closed on holidays. Even eating once a week at Senior Meals will help their participant count and insure that this important program continues!!! Delivery is available for those who are unable to come to the nutrition site. Take out orders for meals are also available for those who choose to stop by and pick up a meal. Take-out meals are usually ready to go at 11:30 a.m. and meals are served at the center at noon. Reservations for meals can be made by calling Sheri Wynia or Jeanne Varilek at 369-2361. Those younger than 60 are also encouraged to consider eating at Senior Meals. For those looking for a birthday or other gift for a hard to buy relative or friend, why not consider a meal ticket? The Springfield site serves on average 54 meals a day. Some days there are more participants and some days are less. Not only does the mealtime provide a nutritious meal, but there is also socialization with others, which is especially important for those who live alone. Senior Meals are funded by ROCS on a percentage basis. Fundraisers, such as the one held Sunday, assist with the purchase of needed items for the meal site such as the refrigerators and stoves, as well as assisting with funding of meals for those unable to pay. The next time your faced with "There's nothing in the fridge and I dont feel like cooking for just myself", why not consider Dakota Senior Meals?!!!
